Position Summary: This position serves as Custodian for Student Recreation. During regular building hours (fall & spring semesters plus January interim), the work shift is 4pm - 12am Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required. During all break weeks, spring interim, and summer, there is the option to move work shift hours to correspond with building hours. Based on building hours and department needs, the work shift may be rescheduled with notice. This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal shift.

The employee may come in contact with blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials. Training will be required in the use of proper cleaning methods and protective equipment. This position requires the operation and maintenance of power equipment to include, but not limited to: vacuums (upright, backpack, tank, wet/dry, portable), shampooers (upholstery, extraction, bonneting), floor scrubbers, floor buffers, pressure washers, lawn mowers, snow blowers and various accessories for the above machines.

This position will function as a member of the Student Recreation custodial team providing excellent facility care and customer service to SRWC and Rec Plex patrons. Employees are expected to be flexible in the performance of their job functions and to communicate respectfully with students, co-workers, supervisors, and other University staff.

70% Performance of Student Recreation custodian duties are to include, but not limited to the daily cleaning of restrooms, locker rooms and showers, meeting rooms, activity areas, halls, stairways, landings, offices, entrances, and elevators in both the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and the Rec Plex:

  1. Clean and disinfect restrooms daily.

  2. Set up and arrange equipment in activity areas and meeting rooms throughout the building (some equipment weighs in excess of 70 pounds).

  3. Sweep and mop stairs and landings, and wipe down handrails as needed.

  4. Vacuum or dust mop and damp mop floors as needed.

  5. Remove trash and recycling daily.

  6. Clean and disinfect water fountains and do bright-work daily.

  7. Clean and polish all furniture as needed.

  8. Spot cleaning of walls, carpeting, furniture, blinds, drapes as needed.

  9. Dust wall vents, grates, doorframes, louvers, ledges, etc. as needed.

  10. Keep utility rooms stocked and in order daily.

  11. Unlock and lock doors and secure windows of buildings at specified times daily.

  12. Maintain walks and entrances daily (sweep and clean, snow and ice removal).

  13. Replace light bulbs, tubes and light lenses as needed.

  14. Perform routine maintenance on artificial turf fields.

  15. Assist Custodian Lead in the training of new employees (permanent, temporary, and student) as needed.

30% Performance of custodial duties during breaks and less busy periods, but not limited to this time:

  1. Deep clean all areas: wash windows, ceilings, vents, pipes, walls, doors and all room furnishings, change lights, and clean carpet and activity area flooring.

  2. Deep clean meeting rooms, offices, hallways, and stairwells.

  3. Fully pressure wash and deep clean kitchen and food service areas at media center, massage therapy room, and break room.

  4. Shampoo carpets and upholstered furniture.

  5. Scrub/strip and refinish tile floors as required.

  6. Work with student workers, training them on techniques and procedures and getting them necessary supplies and equipment.

  7. Mow lawns and garden/landscape tasks.

  8. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Required: 1. Must successfully complete a pre-work screening to ensure the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

2. Ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, squat, and kneel, perform repetitive motions, work overhead, and climb stairs and ladders.

3. Physical strength and stamina to perform required work, including the ability to routinely lift and carry up to 40 pounds; shovel snow; operate a snow blower; and the ability to be on your feet for an entire 8-hour shift.

4. Must pass a criminal background check.

5. First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within 30 days of hire.

5. Conforms to work hours and schedule.
6. Ability to troubleshoot problems and prioritize job tasks.
7. Ability to perform physical labor throughout work hours, including: heavy lifting, bending, stooping, twisting and other motions.
8. Ability to work both independently and with co-workers and supervisors.
9. Understands safety regulations and performs work in a safe manner at all times, utilizing safety and personal protection equipment when necessary.
